Strawberries and Summer

One of my sons had been pleading for a strawberry cheesecake all winter, but I told him we had to wait until the strawberries were fresh.

These are not local berries; we will have to wait until around the middle of June for strawberries around here. Then we will go out to the fields and pick enormous buckets full of them, to freeze and eat later and to make jam, a memory in every bite of the warm summer day that we pick them. Usually, we visit the U-pick farms for blueberries in August, but the children are clamoring for strawberries this year. The younger ones always eat more than they put in the buckets, but most of them are older now and we should bring home quite a pile! I am so looking forward to June, and summer, and picnics.

Until then, we don't mind California strawberries.
